First things first: Why should you care?

Let's get straight to it. This is for people who feel like something is missing in their life. If you feel like your life lacks focus and direction; or you're just tired of where you are emotionally, mentally, and physically in life - this is for you. If this is you, you're probably feeling this way because you're not happy with the quality of your life. Having a purpose (among other things) is critical for improving the quality of your life, because it motivates and sustains you regardless of the circumstances around you. In life, anything not growing is dying. So, it's time for you to grow emotionally, mentally, and physically!

Think about it, there are countless stories of parents who overcame tremendous odds because their purpose was to build a better life for their children and grandchildren. There are many examples of people who were told they'd never walk again, but they overcame the disability because they saw purpose in their circumstances. The common theme: they all had a compelling reason to change their lives. What's your compelling reason? What's the reason you've decided to improve the quality of your life?

We'll provide you with some short exercises you can do to start living a more purposeful life. But, you have to make the following commitment to yourself:

  • I am committed to being open-minded about new possibilities in my life.

  • I am committed to performing these exercises routinely to see results.

  • I am committed to becoming a better version of myself every day.

  • I am committed to creating value for myself by creating value for other people.

Now that you've confirmed your commitment to yourself, let's get to work!

Bottom Line Up Front

Complete the following exercises to develop a framework for the actions you need to take to improve the quality of your life:

  1. Define your beginning.

  2. Develop your purpose statement.

  3. Focus on what matters to you.

  4. Take consistent action and hold yourself accountable.

Step 4 is critical, so keep reading! Use this free framework with The Purpose Planner OR monday.com to create tasks you must complete to live more purposefully and reach the quality of life you desire.

Step 1. Define your beginning.

Everyone thinks they know themselves until they ask - what's my purpose in life? Why is it that we're taught to learn everything but ourselves. We're taught that our fulfillment comes from homes, money, things we buy, and trips we take - everything but ourselves and other people.

Imagine having everything you desire, but no one to share it with. Imagine being able to travel the world whenever you want, but you're always alone and everyone you meet ignores you. Your challenge is to find out who you are without those things. When you make a decision that you want to become more physically fit, one of the first things you might do is take a long look in the mirror and start grabbing on the areas you want to improve. You examine yourself thoroughly. You get on a scale. You look at pictures and say to yourself - "I want to look like this".

Similarly, with your purpose, you'll need to examine yourself. Start by asking yourself: what value do I provide other people? In other words, how does my life make the lives of others better?

At some point, we've all wondered what our purpose in life is. For some of us, this question came after a drunken night of fun that turned into a half-day of being hungover, trying to remember all the fun we thought we had. Some people ask this question after meeting the love of their life. Others just have a feeling something is wrong and want to make a change.

Hold on to that feeling regardless of the circumstance, because your feelings can help you find your purpose. Our feelings are like smoke detectors in the house of our body. Our bodies are highly skilled at alerting us to danger because our bodies are designed to survive. When we get sick, the body gives us a warning (perhaps in the form of a runny nose or a chest ache). The body tells us when our actions (or the actions of others) aren't good for us.

Also, the body tells us when our actions (or the actions of others) are good for us, because when things are good for us the body rewards us with positive feelings of fulfillment and happiness. The actions we take (or don't take) have a direct impact on the way we feel, and those feelings produce our reality.

Spend some time thinking about the following questions until your answer feels right: What are your feelings telling you about the reality of your life right now? And, what can you do to make a positive change?

Getting stuck? Don't worry keep reading.

Step 2. Develop your purpose statement.

Successful companies have a purpose statement - it's called a mission statement.

Our mission is to be Earth's most customer-centric company. This is what unites Amazonians across teams and geographies as we are all striving to delight our customers and make their lives easier, one innovative product, service, and idea at a time. - Amazon

If a purpose statement is good enough for Amazon, then it's good enough for you. Besides, what do you have to lose by developing more clarity about your purpose? When life feels out of balance, it's typically because our actions don't support our purpose, and we're doing things that don't align with our value system. Watch "How to find your purpose". It provides a step-by-step exercise on finding your purpose. Just like going to the gym, you have to be consistent to see results.

Step 3. Focus on what matters to you.

Your focus becomes your future. So, focus on your purpose. Focus on your values, because those are the things that truly matter to you. However, life will present you with distractions when you take actions that support your purpose. Strangers will criticize your effort. Friends and family may not believe in the changes you're making, because they can't let go of who you once were. You might even begin to doubt yourself. This is where you decide what deserves your attention. How much attention will you give negative opinions about your decisions? How much attention will you give to people and things that don't serve your purpose?

The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck: How to Stop Spending Time You Don't Have with People You Don't Like Doing Things You Don't Want to Do (A No F*cks Given Guide), is a great book to help you focus on what matters to you. Read this book for ideas to help you focus on the actions that support your purpose.

Again, your focus becomes your future. So, if your focus is all over the place, what impact do you think that will have on your future?

Step 4. Take consistent action and hold yourself accountable.

Your health truly is your wealth. If you're physically sick, the chance that you'll be productive is pretty low. If you're emotionally sick, for example from heartbreak, the chances you'll be motivated might not be that great. So above all, it's imperative to DEVELOP HEALTHY PATTERNS that fit your lifestyle.

Develop a physical exercise pattern of at least 30 minutes before completing the previous exercises. Now, you're probably saying, "why didn't you say that in the first place?" First, the hope was that you absorbed everything discussed here before you took action. However, if you've already taken action, that's ok! Try exercising for 30 minutes, then complete these exercises again! You'll be surprised that you may come up with even better ideas. This is because exercising has many positive benefits on the brain, including increasing retention of information, increasing the chemical in the body that leads to happiness, sharpening memory, reducing stress, and more.

Is it possible to improve your health and lose weight without exercising? In short, yes! Some people are using cutting edge dietary supplements like Resurge™ to manage their health, and are receiving amazing results. It has a lot to do with GETTING THE PROPER REST! We won't get into this extensively here, but by naturally optimizing your deep sleep cycles, you can look forward to waking up to a leaner, healthier, younger, and way more energized version of yourself every morning.

Completing these exercises produces a comprehensive framework for what you should focus on to live a more purposeful life. It's your job to figure out how. As you can imagine, you'll need to complete several tasks that get you closer to improving the quality of your life.

AFTER completing the framework, use a tool that will hold you accountable for your actions. We recommend the following tools that work well with this framework:

  1. The Purpose Planner: Unique Life & Goal Planning System designed to fast track achievement and manage the day-to-day.

  2. Monday.com: Monday.com is like the task feature on your phone (if it were on steroids). This app allows you to easily manage the complex tasks of your life at no cost.
